One possible 8-unit solution to Puzzle (i) appears in the diagram below.
The key mechanism is a corner-square bishop being uncovered by a diagonally-adjacent rook, which efficiently generates no fewer than fourteen different mates, with one more provided by pawn on g6. The other two pawns eliminate White’s king retreats, so that White’s only legal options are the fifteen mating moves.
